📈 Freight Brokerages See First Growth in 20 Months
For the first time since late 2022, the number of active freight brokerages ticked up. August closed with 29 more brokerages, the biggest monthly gain since November 2022.
Two major cases are raising alarms about who’s really behind the wheel:
Louisiana: DOJ indictment alleges bribes to bypass all CDL requirements — knowledge tests, training, and skills exams. Restaurant owner Mahmoud Alhattab is accused of paying OMV employees and trainers to hand out licenses without testing.
Florida: Investigators found organized cheating with hidden cameras and earpieces during CDL exams. Authorities warn this may be just the “tip of the iceberg.”
These cases follow similar scandals in Washington and Massachusetts, adding to nationwide concerns about CDL integrity. The DOT has launched an audit, and new proposals like “Connor’s Law” could mandate English proficiency in exams.
👉 At stake: trust in the licensing system and whether unqualified drivers are sharing the road with everyone else.
