Travis Long/The News & Observer via AP. Debris is scattered around the Pfizer facility on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, in Rocky Mount, N.C., after damage from severe weather.
A Pfizer pharmaceutical plant in North Carolina was heavily damaged by an EF-3 tornado, resulting in 50,000 pallets of medicine being strewn across the facility and damaged by rain and wind, according to Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The plant, one of the world's largest sterile injectable production locations, produces 25% of all sterile injectable medications used in hospitals across the U.S. and employs over 4,500 people. The plant's damages may potentially cause long-term shortages of these medications until Pfizer can shift production to another facility or rebuild the current one. The tornado, with peak winds of 150 mph, also caused minor injuries to 13 people in the county and damaged at least 89 buildings, including a daycare near the Pfizer plant.
